And over at BetaNews you can read some of the dumbest comments on the story as Americans try to justify control and the illusion that this has got nothing to do with the DoC. Background:
A United Nations panel tasked with how to govern the Internet in the future came up with four different plans, although the panel did agree that the United States could not continue holding complete control. The U.S. government, however, said it had no plans to give up control of the computers that handle Internet traffic.World leaders will consider the options put forth by the panel at an “Information Society” summit in November. One of the proposals does keep the current method as is for the most part, with ICANN maintaining control of how Internet address are used.
Read the comments and it soon becomes clear why root server control can no longer remain in the US. The logic is faltering to put it mildly. I especially like the guy that claims that the US has invented just about everything in old Soviet apparatchik style.
“Mclethal” notes that “The British invented the US, The US should be controlled by Britain if you all want to be ‘we made it so we keep it’.” And then someone aptly brings up the Revolution. The moral being of course that we need to take it by force. Fear and violence being the only message the US understands. Personally I’m sick of negotiating with criminals and always getting blamed for trying to grab things when only trying to even things out.
