Reeaallly … this should be a lesson for those that try to cuddle with the US. Another win for US unilateralism.
AP - A senior U.S. official rejected calls on Thursday for a U.N. body to take over control of the main computers that direct traffic on the Internet, reiterating U.S. intentions to keep its historical role as the medium’s principal overseer.“We will not agree to the U.N. taking over the management of the Internet,” said Ambassador David Gross, the U.S. coordinator for international communications and information policy at the State Department. “Some countries want that. We think that’s unacceptable.”
Is it just me or is the US getting less and less patient with these “some countries?” (which to all intents and purposes include the rest of the world) A while back I believe at least there was a false pretence of willingness to cooperate. Wow, does this fly in the face of claims that the “US DOC doesn’t manage the root servers, ICANN does” or what …
Some negotiators from other countries said there was a growing sense that a compromise had to be reached and that no single country ought to be the ultimate authority over such a vital part of the global economy.
Yeah and while you’re at it, put an end to the dollar hegemony in general and specifically oil trade in dollars. Well, at least some people have awoken from their slumber, seen the US dominated world for what it is and begun to weight in on the risks of maintaining the status quo. Especially as the US plunges deeper into a period of McCarthy-like paranoia, is as untrustworthy as ever, and as natural resources are diminishing.
Nice to see the Slashdot people going at each other for a change … sensitive issue apparently.
