ICANN kills .xxx domain

So, you can’t blame this on China or Iran, now can you?

The Register - ICANN chairman Vint Cerf stunned an open meeting of the governmental advisory committee (GAC) in Vancouver late on Tuesday when he announced that the whole issue had been pulled from the Board meeting agenda - where it had been the first topic of discussion.

More likely is that the US government intervened but is desperate to avoid being seen to do so because of the ongoing Internet governance conflict, where the US government retains unilateral control of the Internet but claims never to use apply it.

The Bush administration has been very effectively lobbied by the Christian right, and the US is desperate to make it look as though other governments are equally concerned about .xxx.

Though the US propaganda and disinformation machine is working overtime to make this look like something it isn’t, this still proves why the functions of ICANN can’t remain a slave under the DoC and the US government and why they are in fact abusing their position in the same fashion that they claim other nations would do. One can speculate about contingencies from here until doomsday, but we can all read the news and form our own opinion about the abuse of power that is going on right now.
Also, a 350 page report on the issue of one single domain? Obviously that brings down the argument that moving ICANN under UN control would create more bureaucracy and that it would run less efficiently.

Slashdot: ICANN seems to think it’s nifty to slash the .XXX domain and in the same week prop up the .ASIA top-level domain. Wow. Talk about inconsistent. “Asia-focused Web sites”? Like someone at Slashdot said: “They all look alike so we should give’em one domain.” Because that is how this reads. In reality I’m opposed to any frivolous domain creations, but we need consistency. Also from the article, ICANN is planning to show that the US doesn’t control ICANN. Good luck with that! If you only spent as much time doing actual work it would be great.
