So much for those compassionate, tolerant Mormons.
Sploid - Hooray! No black people! - A suburban development in Utah is in hot water for making the lack of black people a selling point. On the company’s web site, builder Bigg Homes offered this demographic detail: “Black race population percentage significantly below state average.”
It’s unknown if there’s even a single black person in Eagle Mountain, because the latest census data found only whites (94.6%), Hispanics (3.1%) and American Indians (1.0%) in numbers high enough to count. (”Mixed race” and “Other” account for the remaining 2.4% of Eagle Mountain’s lily white population, leaving open the chance that there’s at least a few drops of African blood somewhere nearby.)
Not only is the claim above dubious by any standard, I’m also puzzled by the rather details demographics data presented in the ad. Why is it important to know that 17.4% never married, that 2.8% are foreign born, that 5.7% have Swedish ancestry or that 1.5% are labelled as “two or more races.” The entire concept not only invites but smacks of bigotry. Also, blaming the “nerd” hardly excuses the behavior. One must assume they did inspect their own site and that any sensible person would have fell off the chair when faced with the data.
One can wonder if this is just something that came out of the twilight zone of Mormon Utah or if this practise is in fact fairly common in the US, despite the bold claims of a tolerant and functioning multicultural society. Talking about Mormons, sometimes there is a reason that “persecuted” people are “persecuted.”
