Sonic Teenager Deterrent

Would-be fascist UK has a new tool against “loitering youths” in the “Sonic Teenager Deterrent.” Apparently loitering is a cause of major social problems in Britain unlike racism against and genocide of foreign peoples which is just considered business as usual. No word yet on how many of the loitering youths were so pissed off […]

MPAA assaults torrent sites

MPAA has launched a new legal volley aimed at what seems to be indexing sites.

In all, nine indexing sites have been targeted (Isohunt.com, BTHub.com and TorrentBox.com all owned by one individual.) BitTorrent: ISOHunt, TorrentSpy, NiteShadow.com, BTHub.com and TorrentBox.com; eDonkey2000: Ed2k-It.com; Newsgroups: NZB-Zone.com, BinNews.com and DVDRs.net.

However, according to Slyck, the MPAA forgot to tell the site […]

Waiting for the Renaissance

Sploid makes an apt comparison between the dark ages and the way we tend to view our contemporary world as well as our own sophistication.

Torture is legal, science is heresy, magic is studied in secrecy, leaders rely on religious fanaticism, poverty sweeps the land as murderous despots hoard wealth behind walls, mysterious plagues terrify the […]

Terry Gilliam on Smothering Studios

Terry Gilliam has little sympathy for Hollywood studios, which he claims have consistently hampered his creative efforts, and he thus somewhat spitefully encourages copyright infringement. As long as you do it in style.

“It’s hard for me to worry about the studios losing money. I’m not very sympathetic to their money problems, because they certainly haven’t […]

U.S. grants patent for … Web 2.0?

Here comes patent no. 7,000,180 [USPTO] or “Methods, Systems, And Processes For The Design And Creation Of Rich-Media Applications Via The Internet.” The git and former Macromedia employee who did it will most likely “sell the patent rather than enforce it himself.” Obvious buyers include gargantuan corporate entities who DO have the ability to enforce […]

WIPO and the Development Agenda

Boing Boing …

EFF’s just posted its Day 2 notes from the meeting, and they’re fascinating. Check out all these developing nations coming to accord on how to protect their interests, and then the US and its states like Mexico (which follows the US’s lead all the time at WIPO) just poo-pooing the whole thing as […]

Star Wars Empire at War

The much anticipated “Star Wars Empire at War” is finally out. I spent the better part of the day testing the various aspects of the game and I’m fairly impressed, seeing as it is a franchise game and all. Still, to get the most out of the game one has to be a total Star […]

Australia blocks graffiti game

Australia gets stupid and effectively bans “Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure” for inciting “the crime of graffiti vandalism.” Sly as they are they didn’t outright ban it either but simply refused classification.

Ironically, the game - which is set in a city of the future - features a world where freedom of expression is […]

MySQL nixed Oracle takeover bid

There are a few software companies with integrity left that you can trust, and one of them is Swedish MySQL AB. In a rare business moment, MySQL turned down an offer from Oracle, staunchly declaring that “we will be part of a larger company, but it will be called MySQL.”
What immediately ensued of course upon […]

Cyber Storm concluded

The US government is apparently concerned with anti-globalization activists, underground hackers and bloggers. Concerned enough to set up a massive dog and pony show, using pretty much every clueless agency as well as computers that weren’t even connected to the Internet. Lets call it a dry run then. Apparently the US government (with other nations’ […]
