Well, apparently MacGyver is back for a brief Super Bowl ad.
Shortflip - The Best Ads of Super Bowl XL - Everybody’s favorite 80’s badass is back at it again in this MasterCard commercial. Although not completely MacGyver-esque (he’s missing the mullet), this ad features some impossible yet ingenious trademark MacGyver moments. Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) is hog tied to a chair with a bomb 54 seconds away from blowing him to shreds. By cutting the tied rope with an air freshener and using a tube sock to zip line out of a multi story window, MacGyver lands safely outside the compound. Before you know it he jacks an 18 wheeler with a paper clip, ballpoint pen, rubber band, tweezers, nasal spray and a turkey baster. While driving his way to freedom, MasterCard declares “it’s the little things that get us through our day” that are priceless. Take all of that to the face and you’ve got the best Super Bowl commercial of 2006.
But all is not good news. As for big sporting events like the Super Bowl itself, it’s corporate embedded militarism as usual.
