New research suggests that consumer culture has a detrimental effect on your emotional well-being. Not that it should be news to anyone, as they point out, clerics and philosophers have made a fuzz about this for millennia. But here is someone using modern psychology, putting a finger on what exactly overt consumption does to human beings in terms of psychological and even physiological distress. It is a surprisingly ugly picture, even for those among us that have already seen the light.
Of course, one would be fool to think that this is only limited to the US. They may have been wound just a little tighter, but it is only a matter of time before the rest of us have caught up.
