Something is rotten ..

.. in the state of Denmark. And if we’re not careful, we might end up in the same mess. No, I’m not referring to the cartoons. All of that has been dealt with and protested against. And it’s not Denmark’s part in the American NATO axis of terror either. No, in fact, Denmark has been making rather chilling headlines elsewhere these last couple of days.

How about punishing Greenpeace using the completely irrelevant, but shiny new, anti-terror legislation. Apparently non-violent civil disobedience is now terrorism. The latest development is that the fine was hiked even more because the 2005 verdict was far too lenient, according to Danish authorities. Adbusters has the background story.
And like with the RIAA / MPAA suing kids, it must seem like pretty good deal for the establishment to sue a non-profit organization that doesn’t have a dime to spare. I guess some take pride in hitting people where it really hurts.

And speaking of those corporate media hooligans, IDG Sweden reports that the Danish supreme court ruled in favour of ISPs being legally bound to terminate suspected file sharers’ accounts and ask questions later. Like someone sarcastically noted, this will surely show those radical Islamists how to run a “free” and “democratic” society.

But lets be fair, this isn’t just about Denmark. It may be a fair case study, and very timely, but the entire world is slowly being enveloped in a similar madness. A two-pronged assault on ordinary people driven by corporate fascism on the one hand and “democratic” shenanigans on the other. Both being bound by the same “tragedy” in that people have become too unruly. One protecting its failing business models and the other its privileges and dominion. Both being mad enough to believe not only in what they are doing but also in makeshift ideological rationales. Life would be much easier if the corporate and political powers that be just admitted to extortion and terror and didn’t act as if they were trying to help us better ourselves. Indoctrinating us in the virtues of consumerism and fearful compliance.
