I believe the Sploid headline needs to be quoted in its entirety: “Capitol cops seek arrest of congresswoman. Cynthia McKinney slapped cop who wouldn’t let her enter Capitol; Republicans call [Georgia's] first black woman in Congress a ‘ghetto slut‘”
Sexism and racism, all at once. For once, we catch a glimpse of the underbelly of American society. The media, spearheaded by WorldNetDaily and other rags, of course try to seize the moment and exaggerate the event, hoping perhaps to rally republican support in McKinney’s district to get her out of the next Georgia’s 4th district primary.
Taken at face value and one incident at a time, it may not be such a remarkable story and the cards may even stack against McKinney. But given the consistent ill-treatment and denigration that Cynthia McKinney has been the subject of for more than a decade now, it is hard not to wonder whether the U.S. has come even close to settling its race issue. Like with so many other past injustices, being equal under the law doesn’t change social structures.
