A new look at the life in “iPod City,” behind the gated world of Apple’s Chinese iPod factories. Now, of course, Apple is not the only company with this sort of business practise, but they must count as one of the larger corporations and as such are setting an unfortunate standard. Plus obviously they have their code of conduct which has been clearly violated. Plenty of lofty promises and a shiny colorful surface, like with the products themselves, but with a dark underbelly. Apple fanatics (like pro-Americans, I just realized) often wonder why people pick on their ideals, and cannot fathom why they themselves are responsible for elevating said ideals to unrealistic levels from where they can really only fall from grace. Apple is just held to a higher standard, celebrated and that is the way you like it, right?

Overall, I’m not terribly surprised to find that Apple is at the forefront of neoliberalism. But at least that Steve “turtleneck” Jobs made a killing, right?

(ADDENDUM) The manufacturer finally admits breaking the law: “iPod City” admits labor law violations Wow, breaking Chinese labour laws takes some doing. Telling: Apple sends team to investigate but finds nothing wrong. So much for Apple’s fine sense of social responsibility. Now, where is the outrage among the indie crowd and turtle necks?
