It reads like a paragraph from Les Misérables frankly. Way to prioritize during and in the wake of Katrina.
Three people convicted of hauling away liquor, wine and beer from a grocery store after Hurricane Katrina were sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison. The judge said he wanted to send a message that looting would not be tolerated when he gave the maximum sentence to Coralnelle Little, 36, Rhonda McGowen, 42, and Paul C. Pearson, 36, all of Kenner.
The dangerous and subversive mastermind trio lifted a total of 27 bottles of liquor and wine, six cases of beer and one case of wine coolers. Yes indeed, wine coolers. I hear they’re vital in any emergency and must be safeguarded from looter.
So while people were drowning, starving and dehydrating, the authorities thought it would be a good idea to prioritize private ownership and stave off looting. Instead of say, lending them a hand and saving lives. Really urgent measure too as three looters could surely do some damage that a hurricane, flooding and tons of toxic sludge hadn’t already. Could it be more obvious that the powers that be don’t care a whit about people and would rather look after economic interests ad absurdum?
What a travesty of justice. As if we ever see anything else from the US.

they deserved it. why weren’t they helping others instead of stealing? may they rot
How would they have done that exactly? By "looting" water, food and rescue vehicles? Or "trespassing", or whatever, and getting beaten or shot by the private and unaccountable security forces that prowled the area? Oh wait, I know …. they could have prayed. Like Americans like to do instead of dealing with the matter at hand. It’s just another way of shifting blame and responsibility isn’t it.
