Freedb Closing

GPL’ed and 2 million record strong Freedb seems to be closing its doors to the public due to developer infighting. A devastating blow fore sure. Freedb has become the defacto standard with the music community and is the only viable option for most mp3 taggers like for instance my own personal favourite, Tag&Rename. I wouldn’t exaggerate if I said I usually interface with Freedb more than once a day. Still, kudos to the project leader for not bowing down to web 2.0 pressure and not turning the project commercial. I think we can all respect that.

Hopefully this can still be resolved somehow, even if the situation seems dire indeed. I mean, what other services are there? We of course have Gracenote (”CDDB2,” 4 million albums) which everyone ran from in the first place to form Freedb? Or Musicbrainz with its equally dodgy license agreement and no more than 400.000 albums under its belt? Freedb2?
