Microsoft Zune

It would seem just about everyone has weighed in on the elusive DAP from Microsoft. Most have graciously offered their doomsday visions and flimsy reasons why Microsoft is bound to fail. Many have lamented that Microsoft didn’t have the good taste to limit itself to the PC scene and its peripherals. Yeah, it does ring more than a little hallow when you hear that sort of talk from Apple fanboys seeing as Apple itself didn’t constrain itself to just building crappy computers but just had to branch out to crappy DAPs as well. Yet, despite their flaws they managed to nab 70-75% of the market in some regions. Flaws and snags aren’t the problem because obviously iPods are selling like hotcakes.

There is no reason to think Microsoft will do any worse barring of course a complete meltdown. So what if MS may have developed smart phones and other devices in the past that did fail. That wasn’t mainly due to design flaws (even if there were plenty) but rather due to a lack of demand and niche products in a relatively high price segment. Just look at the Atari Lynx and Portfolio for some precedence in the field of products launched ahead of their time. Now, contrary to various unrepresentative concept designs, DAPs are in demand and they place themselves in a different price segment altogether.

So, here’s to Microsoft putting its foot up Apple’s ass. Because someone needs to do exactly that. Microsoft isn’t exactly synonymous with business ethics, but having seen Apple conduct its business it seems abundantly clear that the best thing to hope for is the two technology giants beating each other bloody.

The xbox 360 will be Microsoft’s ticket to success with the Zune product line. MS has one foot in the door with the gaming system, I bet the zune will be highly integrated.
