The Year In Cartoons

The wired world has been buzzing with the fear-mongering perpetrated by the most American of American organizations — the National Rifle Association (NRA). For a while, the authenticity was being questioned and NRA-folk would have had us believe it was all some disinformation campaign. Not so. So anyway, just in case anyone did miss the hoopla:

NRA’s Secret Graphic Novel Revealed! [Wonkette]
Fear-mongering graphic novel attributed to NRA [Boing Boing]
In case you missed it: NRA’s wacky graphic novel [Boing Boing]

From the introduction to “Freedom in Peril Guarding the 2nd Amendment in the 21st Century”:

Second Amendment freedom today stands naked in the path of a marching axis of adversaries far darker and more dangerous than gun owners have ever known. Acting alone and in shadowy coalitions, these enemies of freedom are preparing for a profound and foreboding confrontation in which they will not make the mistakes of their predecessors. We’d better be ready.

Like any good piece of propaganda, the NRA pamphlet has a great deal of truth to it. It’s just that the 2nd amendment isn’t going to solve any of the very real problems mentioned, twisted and exaggerated. Not to mention how many of the interpretations cross the line between fear-mongering and racism, bigotry. And how hypocritical it is to spend an entire pamphlet actively fear-mongering and then finish up by accusing the media of doing the same.
