Scientology

Mock scientology website threatened - www.scienTOMogy.info hit a bit of snag last week when the Church of Scientology threatened court action against the New Zealand-based Web site. Once again proving that legal action is second nature to the so called religion.
Hurricane advantage - The COS is swarming US hurricane struck areas adding insult to injury. [...]

Scientists versus Faith

Specifically Scientists vs. the Dalai Lama. Nature editorialized about this a while back. I don’t remember the issue but you can always look it up. I think it’s been brought up more than once. I did however find correspondence from Janis Dickinson in Nature 436, 912 (18 August 2005).

CNET, Stefanie Olsen - Hundreds of scientists [...]

Why do we believe in God?

Somewhat ironic possibility: Evolution.
Guardian has an extract from Robert Winston’s latest book The Story of God. A series by the same name is also currently being put together for the BBC.

Guardian - In his book Darwin’s Cathedral, David Sloan Wilson, professor of biology and anthropology at Binghamton University in New York state, says that religiosity [...]

Societies worse off with God on their side

Via David Galbraith

Times Online - RELIGIOUS belief can cause damage to a society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide, according to research published today.
According to the study, belief in and worship of God are not only unnecessary for a healthy society but may actually contribute to social problems.
The study counters the [...]

Marching Penguins, Intelligent Design

March of the Penguins Supporting Intelligent Design Theory. Really?

Christian conservatives have claimed that March of the Penguins, the documentary of emperor penguins by Luc Jacquet, is a film that support Intelligent Design.
The film, narrated by Morgan Freeman, distributed by Warner Independent Pictures, is a real-life documentary which follows a flock of emperor penguins in the [...]

Cult Watch - August

Xenu.net under attack by “Religious Freedom Watch”. Apparently they have now contacted his employer by email to try and get him fired using lies and innuendos. Right up their alley I might add.
NCHRA Censures Scientology Inc.’s Human Rights Abuse in Norway - “The National Coalition of Human Rights Activists emphatically denounces the Scientology corporation’s flagrant [...]

A Nation of Indians

Via The Daily Show …
“The most religious nation in the world is India. The least religious nation in the world is Sweden. We’re a nation of Indians, ruled by Swedes.”

A real gem from something called Justice Sunday II, where white Christian conservatives get together and act as if they are somehow persecuted.
And like India, the [...]

Catholic Matrix Spoof Poster

Really. This is in fact not a FARK or Worth1000 photoshop contest.

“Just as Keanu Reeves fought against the powers of evil, a priest comes to help people fight against sin. There is a battle out there,” explained Father Jonathan Meyer, associate director of youth and young adult ministry for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
He made the [...]

Cult and Sect Statistics, Zionism

It’s an overall slow sunday so I decided to do a sweep of religious activity in Sweden and tie together a few loose ends that have been bothering me for some time. First some facts from the otherwise dubious US State Dept’s “Religious Freedom Report” for 2004.

SWEDEN: [...] its population is an estimated 9.0 million. [...]

Jehovah’s Witnesses on the defensive?

While not exactly a world event, I noticed that the local (Skövde, Sweden) incarnation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses are selling off their missionary and property. 1.95M SEK. Quite the bargain if you can only manage to wash off the religious stain.
Something hit me though when I realized that their missionary is only across the road [...]
